
Making Gallium Iodide Lamps That Actually Last (Without Breaking the Bank)
Building a gallium iodide lamp is a bit of a balancing act. We’re basically trying to hit a very specific sweet spot in the infrared and ultraviolet spectrum. To do that, we spend a lot of time obsessing over the halogen cycle and exactly how much gallium iodide goes into the quartz envelope. Get that wrong, and you’ve got a lamp that either doesn’t hit the right wavelength or burns out way too fast. Getting the power right Here’s the thing about performance: it all comes down to gas pressure and how hot that filament gets. We tweak the voltage and wattage so you get the thermal punch you need without frying the electrodes. If you’re running industrial curing or heating lines, you probably want the high-wattage setup because it ramps up fast. But be careful with your power supply. If you push too much voltage through the tube, you’ll degrade the compound and kill the lamp’s lifespan. It’s a quick way to waste money. The build quality We use high-purity fused quartz because these things get hot—really hot. If the material can’t handle the thermal shock, it’s game over. The real headache, though, is the seal where the quartz meets the lead wires. That’s usually where lamps fail. We use a specific fusion process to make sure no gas leaks out. If you lose your gas, you lose your light. Plus, we handle everything in-house. We do the quartz processing and the gas filling ourselves. By cutting out the middlemen, we can keep the costs down and pass that along to you. A few warnings before you install These lamps are intense, but they throw off a lot of waste heat. If you cram one into a tight housing without any airflow, your socket is going to overheat. It’s not pretty. Before you start installing, double-check your footprint and make sure your cooling system can actually handle the IR load. A “drop-in” replacement sounds easy, but it only works if your cooling can keep up with the chemistry of the gallium iodide.
