
Shortwave, Medium-wave, or Twin-tube? Picking the Right IR Setup for Metal Curing
When you’re curing powder on metal, you’re basically playing a game of timing. You want to hit that target temperature fast, but you don’t want to keep the metal in the oven longer than it needs to be. If you leave it too long, you’re just wasting energy—or worse, ruining the part. The real question is how you get that heat into the coating.
Let’s talk wavelengths
Shortwave lamps are the sprinters. They hit the surface with a ton of intensity right out of the gate. If you’ve got heavy metal parts with a thin layer of powder and you need a fast ramp-up, this is your go-to. It’s quick. Really quick. But if your parts have weird shapes, deep pockets, or complex angles, shortwave can be tricky. That’s where medium-wave comes in. Medium-wave is more of a slow burn. It doesn’t start as fast, but the heat sinks in deeper and spreads out more evenly. It’s the best way to avoid those annoying “cold spots” that lead to curing failures and expensive re-dos.
The Twin-Tube trick
Sometimes you just need more raw power, but you don’t have an inch of extra space in your oven. That’s why we use twin-tube designs. Basically, we’re doubling the emitter surface area without making the tube longer. You get way more IR output per inch. It’s a great way to beef up your heat density so you can crank up the conveyor speed without the parts coming out under-cured.
The honest trade-offs
Look, no lamp is perfect. There’s always a catch. Shortwave tubes are sensitive. If your voltage isn’t dialed in and regulated, they’ll burn out way faster than they should. They need a steady hand. Medium-wave tubes are the workhorses—they last longer—but you have to be okay with a longer “soak time” for the parts. And then there are the twin-tubes. These things pull a massive amount of power. If you decide to swap in a twin-tube array, please, check your wiring and contactors first. If they aren’t spec’d for the extra current, you’re going to melt your terminals. And that is a bad day at the office. If you need speed, go shortwave. If you need it perfectly even, stick with medium-wave. And if your line is moving faster than your oven can keep up with, go twin-tube.
