Let’s talk about our 120W/cm Mercury UV Lamps
We built our standard lamps at 120W per centimeter for a reason. Most industrial curing lines use this as their benchmark. It’s that “sweet spot” where you get enough UVC punch to trigger the photo-initiators in your inks and coatings, but you aren’t accidentally warping your substrates.
Getting the power right
Here is the thing about a 120W/cm rating: it’s a concentrated stream of short-wave radiation. To handle that, we use high-purity fused quartz for the envelope. It’s tough enough to hold the mercury vapor plasma while letting the UV rays fly right through. But you’ve got to be careful with your ballast settings. If you try to “over-drive” the lamp just to speed up your line, you’re going to fry the electrodes. On the flip side, under-driving it is just as bad—you’ll end up with “tacky” surfaces and a lot of wasted material because the cure didn’t finish.
Why we’re cheaper (without being “cheap”)
Most suppliers just buy pre-made tubes and fill them. We don’t do that. We handle everything—from the quartz tubing to the electrode assembly. We pick the quartz grade and the mercury purity ourselves. By cutting out the middleman and keeping our operation lean, we can give you a price that doesn’t force you to compromise on how long the lamp actually lasts.
The trade-off: Heat
These lamps are easy to swap into most standard UV conveyors. They just work. But they runhot. Really hot. At 120W/cm, the heat soak is no joke. If your reflectors are dusty or your exhaust fans are clogged, the quartz will stress and the lamp will fail. We’ve seen tubes die in half their expected lifespan simply because someone ignored the airflow specs. Keep your cooling system clean. Your lamps will thank you for it.
